If you feel like you are gaining weight for no reason you are not alone. A lot of women struggle with weight gain even when they are eating healthy food and trying to stay active. The truth is, weight gain is not always about the food you eat and the exercise you do. In fact your body could be trying to tell you something. And it is often not what you think.
One of the reasons for weight gain that people do not think about is hormonal imbalance. Hormones are like messengers in your body that control things like how hungry you feel and how your body uses energy. When these hormones are out of balance your body may start to store fat easily. For example women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome may find it harder for their body to control insulin, which can lead to fat storage around the stomach. Similarly thyroid problems like Hashimotos thyroiditis can slow down your metabolism causing you to gain weight even if you are eating the food.
Another thing that can cause weight gain is insulin resistance. This is when your body stops using insulin which is a hormone that controls your blood sugar levels. As a result your body stores sugar as fat. A lot of women with insulin resistance do not even know they have it. Some common signs include craving food feeling tired and gaining weight around the belly.
Stress is also a factor. When you are stressed all the time your body makes cortisol, which is like a stress hormone. High cortisol levels can make you hungrier crave food and store more fat. Especially around the middle. So even if you are eating healthy food stress could be stopping you from losing weight.
Sleep is also very important. Not sleeping well can disrupt the hormones that control how hungry you feel making you feel hungrier and less full after eating. If you are sleeping than 6 or 7 hours a night your body is more likely to hold onto weight and burn fewer calories during the day.
Then there is your gut health. If your gut is not healthy it can affect how your body uses food absorbs nutrients and controls inflammation. If you have bloating, digestion or cravings all the time it could be a sign that your gut needs some attention. Research is showing that the bacteria in your gut can even affect your weight.
Finally you might be making choices that you think are healthy. Are actually working against you. A lot of processed diet food has hidden sugars and additives that can make you hungrier and gain weight. Even things, like smoothies, granola and fat products can cause weight gain if you have too much of them.
So what can you do? Start by focusing on balance of cutting out foods. Eat foods that are full of nutrients prioritize protein and try to eat less sugar. Manage stress by doing things like walking, deep breathing or taking breaks during the day. Try to sleep and consider checking your hormone levels if you think there is something more serious going on.
Unexplained weight gain is your bodys way of telling you that something is not right. It is not something to be ashamed of. Once you understand what is really going on you can start making changes that will actually work.
